Flea Market Treasures

Last Saturday I decided to make a trip over to the DeAnza College monthly flea market in Cupertino. I was trying to decide between this flea market on Saturday or the Alameda Antique Faire on Sunday.  Looks like I made the right executive decision because Alameda was rained out.   At least we're finally getting some much needed rain around here with a lot more expected this weekend.  Some of the treasures that followed me home...

A tray full of fun projects.

I
This vintage clothes brush set spoke to me.  Do you think I should paint it, or clean up the wood and leave it as is?  Any other ideas?

It was a butter knife kind of day.  I found 26 in all, plus a few spoons.  I stamped (tutorial here) about half of them already and added them to my inventory at the Paris Flea Market for their opening this weekend.

Ice box cookie molds.  Someone beat me to the heart.

Miscellaneous junque.  I brought the cool old box, two wire baskets, and the hidden iron scrolls over to the Paris Flea Market already.  The galvanized can got a mini makeover with burlap and a Creamery stencil.  I'm leaving the old sign just the way it is.

I got a little carried away and bought eight of these rusty hearts.

These are about two feet wide and made from wine barrel rings.  I see them all over the place at just about every flea market and antique show, but never at such a bargain price. I deserve to keep just one, right?

  2. Love those hearts, I've never seen them before! Must be a wine country thing? And yes, you have to keep one:) I also love the bling and the flower frog. You got a ton of great stuff! Good luck this weekend, I'm sure you'll be a big hit.

  3. "A butter knife kind of day." You should submit it to the BKPA (Butter Knife Promoters of America) for their official motto.

Love those hearts, I haven't seen them before. What a simple beautiful concept! The wood on the brush set looks dated, perhaps? I know you will work some of your usual magic on it.

I am going to go check out the stamping tutorial right now.

  5. YES, you should keep one! Boy did you make the right decision on which way to go, love those refrigerator moulds. And you can never have to much bling and odds and ends to craft with. Lol...I recognized my silver plate pattern in your stamped knives. And as for that wonderful brush set, my painting heart says "not this one"...it's so beautiful as is, the patina is gorgeous.

  6. Loved what you found at the flea market. I've never seen those before. I don't think they go much for heart shaped things in France at least not where I live. But you definetaly must keep one. You asked for ideas for he vintage brushes. If your keeping them, I think I'd vamp them up, paint the wall holder a creamy shade and decoupage the backs of the brushes, using pages from a vintage book in small print or yellowed sheet music. but if you intend selling them on just clean them up & let the buyer decide.

  7. Wonderful finds, Betsy, I love what you did with the butter knives! The wood brush set might look sweet cleaned up and decoupaged with a tiny nosegay of roses or forget me nots. Love those barrel hearts. Hugs xo Karen

  9. Hi Betsy!
It took me a minute to figure out what you meant by " somebody beat me to the heart", regarding the cookie molds, lol. (Kind of a shame somebody broke up the set)
The wooden brush set is hung on that awesome shield-shaped plaque, which has a cool masculine vibe...which makes me think it should all be left dark and woodsy. My two cents...

  10. Nice haul! Yes - You may keep one of the hearts. :) Nice bit of bling!
If going to sell the brush set, do what you think would bring the best price.

  23. Terrific treasures all. I have not seen the barrel rings made into hearts. I would have to keep one. The brush set needs to remain in wood.

  24. Great finds, every one! As much as I love a natural wood finish, I can sure see that brush set with one of your signature stencils treatments.

  25. I'd say you really scored. Can someone explain how the cookie molds work? I can't see how the mold could be filled with dough without airholes. I thought they might be chocolate molds. Of course the ends would be capped for chocolate. And the wood brush set does seem very masculine and seems for once that painting might not be the best choice for resale.

  26. YES you do deserve to keep a heart! Can I ask what you are going to sell them for? You really scored Betsy!!!! I'm in Arizona and found an old egg crate fairly reasonable now trying to figure out how to get it and everything else in my suitcase LOL.

  30. are you going to sell the other rusty hearts?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yup you sure do! They are perfect for Valentine's Day! What a great haul - you get the best stuff down there. Too bad about the 3/4 set of ice box molds. They should have sold them as a set!

  32. WOW!! More great finds...I want to come "flea marketing" with you! That "medal" shaped brush hook thingy is so cool. And those metal hearts...I've never seen them before...definitely keep one :)

  34. I always love looking at your finds! The brush set is awesome, when I first saw it I thought about some I have, without the cool board to hang them from...so idea for me.
For you, if you sell it I would probably keep it the way it is. To keep, I can see you dressing it up with some metal pieces to make it look so much better!
I also love the hearts! Ideas are running through my mind with those. I just made some cute wall pieces with smaller cookie cutter hearts.
