My 2016 Favorite Trash to Treasure Projects

I sure hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas holiday celebration! I don't know about you, but I'm feeling the need to kick back and relax awhile before the new year and new adventures begin. I always enjoy looking back through the year and re-sharing some of my favorite projects. So.....in no particular order, I put together a collection of my favorite 2016 trash to treasure projects. You can click on the link below each picture to see the original post. I hope you enjoy them the second time around.

Farmhouse Stencil Love

Where has the time gone? Here we are in the middle of December already and I still haven't crossed off all the names on my Christmas list. I've been so busy the last several weeks preparing for my holiday craft shows, and I just finished the last one for the year. Yes!

In the middle of the jewelry making marathon, I was in the mood for cooking up a few more signs.

I've been looking forward to using my FARMHOUSE stencil from *Funky Junk Interiors Old Sign Stencils.
After giving the box lid a light white-washing, I attached a large hook to the back and two chippy old hooks to each side.

A New Member of the Pumpkin People Family

I was a late bloomer when it came to buying pumpkins this year. I had every intention of creating another family of pumpkin people for my last two vintage shows, but the stores around here weren't carrying small pumpkins and I eventually ran out of creating time. I couldn't let the year go by without creating at least one new member of the family.

Make a unique Pumpkin People creation with vintage trinkets and a tarnished silver teapot.

How to Create a Cloche with Old Junk

Is it really October already? Anyone else having a hard time adjusting to these shorter days? This is actually my favorite time of the year, but this year seems to be crazier than normal. I've been busy preparing for my vintage show this weekend, and I've also been putting in a lot of time and effort toward our decluttering/downsizing goal.

When I posted about the first round of our decluttering process a few weeks ago, I showed a picture of some dishes and a large glass vase in a basket. I had second thoughts about donating or selling the vase when I discovered it might just make a cool cloche if I could find the right base.

Score! I found the perfect base right in my own cluttered garage. I actually found three of them once
I started digging, but this one was just the right size.

Unloading the Clutter One Cabinet at a Time

Can we talk about downsizing, purging, unloading, clearing the clutter? Whatever you want to call it, the quest for less is alive and well around here, and I'm addicted. This phenomenon can strike at any time or at any age. Sooner or later the stuff just has to go! Things change. The nest gets smaller. Lifestyles change. Priorities change.
We've finally realized and accepted that downsizing in the near future (or sometime before the end of the decade if I stop procrastinating) is inevitable. I'm good with that. It's going to be a long and winding road, but the journey has to start somewhere. I'm clearing the clutter one cabinet, one drawer, and one closet at a time. Baby steps.

I'm really excited to be joining some of my "50 and Fabulous" blogging friends to share our views and experiences on how things have changed for us in life after 50.....and beyond.

Vintage green depression glass
Once upon a time, I would buy every piece of inexpensive green depression glass I could find. Those days are gone. In fact, I don't think these pieces have seen the light of day in at least five years when I painted the hutch they were stored buried in. I'll be keeping some of the larger platters and bowls for now, but I have my doubts they'll make it past the next few rounds of my quest for less.

How to Give Outdated Frames a Fresh New Look

It's been a busy month around here as I try to cross things off of my must-do list, but I'm still trying to squeeze in some want-to-do projects for a vintage and antique show in just a few weeks. I get on a roll first thing in the morning while the garage is still somewhat comfortable to work in, then move the factory inside when the early afternoon heat turns it into a sauna.

These updated frames with vintage jewels and burlap were a quick and easy project completed in the comfort of my air conditioned craft room fort.

Repurposed Antique Stereoscope

I bought this antique stereoscope (View-Master predecessor) at a yard sale a few years ago along with a box of stereoscope cards. Most of the cards sold right away, but the stereoscope just wouldn't budge. Silly me, I thought a missing card holder and broken handle wouldn't matter to a collector or to someone who thought it was as cool as I did. Wrong!

After collecting enough dust to make visibility through the lenses almost impossible, I decided it was time for another look.

How to Use Old Junk to Display Pretty Flowers

With summer in full bloom, I thought this would be a perfect time to round up some of my trash to treasure projects where I've used old junk to display pretty flowers. I hope you enjoy my junky flower containers the second time around! Just click on the title below each picture to take you to the original post.

Build a Rustic Flower Market Sign with Scrap Wood

I love it when I'm able to find a good old piece of junky wood for making a good old rustic looking sign. It was time for an addition to the little bird house corner in my backyard, and the first thing I thought of was to create another rustic sign with some Old Sign Stencils* from Funky Junk Interiors.

The perfect piece of junky wood didn't exist in my stash, so I had to create one myself from scrap wood.

Let Freedom Ring

Is it really July already? I'm still trying to figure out what happened to the entire first half of the year. Who can relate? I ran out of time for any hopes of some serious 4th of July holiday decorating, so I opted for a quick makeover to one of my vintage rake picture holders.

I created a Let Freedom Ring stencil with my Silhouette Cameo and stenciled it on a strip of jute webbing. So quick and easy, but it looked so lonely.

Grocery Store to Gorgeous, Repurposed Food Containers

When I first started thinking about something to create for this challenge, the first thing that popped into my head was a vision of little flower boxes made with vintage spice tins. Unfortunately, I didn't have any in my inventory at the time, so I went looking through my sad and neglected kitchen spice cabinet in hopes of finding something that had Grocery Store to Gorgeous repurposing potential.

Score! Two half-empty pepper cans. Who needs that much pepper anyway?
Then I headed out to the garage in search of something to hang the cans on. Love the old cheese graters. Score again!

My Latest Junking Finds

I was out of town for several days last week and took a break from working on any new projects. Even though I had a full schedule planned with family and friends, I did manage to squeeze in a few yard sales on Saturday morning.

The only thing that caught my eye at the first sale was this chippy red metal box. I grabbed it and never let go when the lady said she wanted 25 whole cents for it!

Make a Rustic Tray from the Side of an Old Crate

Don't you love it when a project comes together completely by accident? That's just what happened with this rustic tray I put together from the side of an old crate, yardstick pieces, and sheet metal.

Trash to Treasure Cast Iron Garden Planters

I came across a really interesting booth while shopping at an antique show last month. The entire booth was packed full of junky junk that was spread out on the ground from one end of the space to the other. Most of it was nearly impossible to identify. My kind of junk!

Trash to Treasure Projects for the Vintage Street Faire

I've been busy all week trying to complete dozens of projects for my next vintage show on Saturday. This one's going to be a real treat because it's right here in town. It will be the first Downtown Tracy Vintage & Antiques Street Faire. We're long overdue for an event like this!

Trash to treasure projects for the vintage street faire
I only had time to get a few pictures of some of the stuff I've been working on because I've been so busy with cleaning, repurposing, pricing, and packing. Oops. Just realized I didn't get a separate picture of the miniature windmill that I turned into a picture/business card holder. I glued a magnet to the back of a typewriter key, watch face, and rhinestone jewel.

Rustic Signs Made from an Old Crate

Signs are always a big hit at my vintage shows and I love making them out of rustic wood or unusual salvaged junk. These three signs have two things in common: they're all stenciled with Funky Junk Interiors Old Sign Stencils from the *Getaway Collection, and they're all made from the wood of a salvaged crate. I found an old crate at a yard sale for next to nothing because half the bottom was missing and the rest of it was falling apart. I knew just what I wanted to do with the wood after I easily disassembled it.

How to Create a Bouquet with Aluminum Light Reflectors

Who remembers Christmas tree aluminum light reflectors? I was always fascinated with these delicate star-shaped and flower-shaped aluminum reflectors and how they made our tree lights and outdoor lights sparkle.

I'm not sure how safe the vintage reflectors are with their cardboard centers, but it's safe to say they make a fine looking bouquet.
So easy to care for and guaranteed to never die. Never ever!

Make a Tea Light Holder from a Pulley and Scrap Wood

Most of you know by now that I love rusty stuff. I love it a lot! I don't always have an immediate plan for the rusty bits and pieces I bring home, but it's good to know that when inspiration strikes I can always rely on my rusty junk treasure box.

Repurposed Ceramic Heater Bricks

What the heck are ceramic heater bricks? Remember these interesting looking things I showed you a few weeks ago in my post The End of my Junking Dry Spell?  If you've ever lived in an older home, you might know that these decorative bricks were used for heat radiation in old gas space heaters, and they were made in several different sizes, shapes, and patterns. I rarely see them at flea markets or vintage shows, but they can still be found online by searching vintage ceramic gas heater bricks

I repurposed my first decorative brick about 10 years ago, so I knew exactly what I wanted to do with this pair.

Let's Go Shopping at Remnants of the Past

I did something on Friday that I've never done before.  I finally had a chance to visit one of the most popular antique shows in California, Remnants of the Past.  Every time they make their way up to Northern California, I'm either out of town or I'm busy doing something else. Not this time. Want to take a little tour?

Fleurs Garden Tote and a Tiny Sign

Flowers, flowers, and more flowers! That's what I've had on my mind lately, and when I throw a little rustic metal in the mix, I'm as happy as a family of aphids on my rose bushes. That's another story.

decorate a garden tote with wood slices - create a new sign with an old tool
I'm kind of loving the contrast between the white and lavender blooms, the rustic metal tote, and the wood slice letters.  Playing in the garden and playing with a few yard sale finds is always a fun way to spend a spring afternoon.

The End of my Junking Dry Spell

My junking dry spell has finally come to an end. It seems like ages since I explored a decent flea market, and my yard sale adventures haven't been too exciting either. Last weekend I made it to one yard sale and one college flea market, and I'm happy to say that I didn't have to rearrange the existing junk in my garage to accommodate this new-to-me pile of junk.
yard sale and flea market junk
I did stray from my "focus list" a bit, but I can't resist a good deal and I can't resist rust!!
See that flower bucket? There was a brand new one sitting right next to it, but I chose the less expensive one. The one with all the rust inside. I also chose the rusty red carrier over the perfect and more expensive one. Old crates and boxes, picture frames, and silverware are always on my list.
Not pictured are 23 little vintage bottles that were busy soaking in an Efferdent bath.

Upcycled Sewing Machine Cabinet Drawers

Don't you just love old sewing machine cabinet drawers?  I've purchased and upcycled several stray drawers over the years, usually by finding them one drawer at a time. I see them all the time in vintage shops and flea markets, but they rarely come home with me because of the high price tags.

Trash to Treasure Photo Display

I'm always in the mood for a quick and easy photo display project, especially if it involves using bits and pieces of junk I already have. This trash to treasure photo display board took me less than 30 minutes to assemble once I rounded up all the ingredients.
