How to Transform a Boring Burlap Canvas

I don't know about you, but I'm still trying to find my way back to where I left off before Christmas. I had no idea where I was going to begin, but this plain burlap canvas I picked up on sale the day after Christmas seemed like a good starting point.

I was thinking that it just might be a perfect size for the Old Sign Stencil I just received from Donna at Funky Junk Interiors to try out.

How's this for a perfect fit?
I love this Antiques and Collectibles stencil that comes with an extra set of numbers so you can customize the date.

Quick and easy! It only took me about 45 minutes from start to finish.

How to stencil a custom sign
This one is for keeping, so I decided to go with Est. 1990, the year we moved into our home.
I taped off part of the date that I didn't need.

Then replaced the numbers with 9 and 0.

It needed a little something extra, so I glued some jute braiding around the outer edge, and four decorative brass pieces to the corners.

how to hang a custom sign
I screwed in a couple of rusty eye hooks and attached part of a vintage chain for hanging.

It's so easy to customize just about anything with the interchangeable numbers. I know exactly what a few people are getting for Christmas next year.

    1. Thanks, Laurie. I pick up chain remnants all the time while I'm out junking, but I can't remember exactly where I found this one.
