Make a Rustic Tray from the Side of an Old Crate

Don't you love it when a project comes together completely by accident? That's just what happened with this rustic tray I put together from the side of an old crate, yardstick pieces, and sheet metal.

repurposed crate and vintage yardsticks made into a tray
Perfect for holding an indoor plant and a couple of my junky junk projects.

use the side of an old crate as a rustic tray base
I was all set to use this last piece of a broken crate to make one more rustic sign, but then I flipped it over and realized the wedges on each end looked like feet.
This needed to be a tray!

use vintage yardsticks to make a rustic tray
I glanced over at the bundle of yardstick pieces that were loitering on my workbench, hoping I had enough to go around. Yes!

vintage meter stick
No fancy corners or precision cuts allowed.
I used a hand saw, a little wood glue, and a few tiny nails here and there.

use sheet metal to line the bottom of a rustic tray
I used tin snips to cut down a piece of sheet metal leftover from another project, then I nailed it down in each corner before attaching the yardsticks.
SAFETY FIRST! Always wear gloves when working with sheet metal!

Gotta love those stubby feet.

  20. Oh good grief Betsy! This is adorable! Girl...you got some creativity going on and I love it. I am in awe that you used even a hand saw! My man would have a stroke if he even thought I was going to be pick up a saw of any kind. He thinks cause I'm a lefty that I am at RISK! LOL! But, that's bad for him really cause that just means he has to do all the cutting for my little projects! LOL! I love your tray! Hugs and blessings, Cindy
