Road Trip Repurposed Necklaces

I love a good road trip, so I decided to do some travelling across the country this week.  I started in California, worked my way down to Texas, up to Iowa and Wisconsin, and finally ended up in New York.  I wish!  What an adventure, but only in my dreams.    I still had fun putting these necklaces together as I imagined myself stopping at every flea market, yard sale, and antique faire from California to New York.

Do you remember these cute mini license plate key chains?  They were issued by the Disabled American Veterans (DAV)  as a fund raiser from the early 1940s through the mid 1970s.  They matched your car plates and if you lost your keys, they could be traced back to you if an honest person dropped them in a mailbox.

There's one more necklace with a New York license plate, but I just couldn't get a good picture of it.

I'm excited to say that I've been busy with trying to get my new Etsy shop open....finally!  It's been a slow process with everything else I've been working on, but hopefully I'll have the shelves stocked and the doors open in the next couple of weeks.

  1. When I first started reading your post I thought, WOW, what a brave woman to tackle a trip like that!!
If only in our dreams...that's still OK. Wish you had one from Kansas, I would snatch it up in a heartbeat! Have a great weekend!

  2. Yes, I do remember seeing those tiny license plates! What a fabulous idea you have in turning them into these super cool necklaces. Love it!

  3. I think I have seen them before (been a while), but did not know the story behind them. Love the way you paired them with keys. If you did make that long of a road trip you like to travel a lot more than I do. :D
Hope you are enjoying your weekend.

  4. I love these. Do you have any with a Mass plate? Are these going into your store?

  5. Hi, I wasn't able to reply directly back to you. I don't have any Mass plates right now. I wish I had every state in the country:-) Yes, they will be in my Etsy store hopefully by next week. Thanks for asking.

  6. I can't wait to see your etsy shop...what goodies will I find...

Love those necklaces, wish I had a Washington plate...I think I did at some point when I was little.

  7. So creative to make necklaces from mini license plates, keys, and typewriter keys. You are amazing, to have come up with it. Sure wish some of your creativity would rub off on me.

  8. I was thinking...What? You didn't come to Mississippi!!?! :) The license plate necklaces are great. I can't wait to visit your new etsy shop when it opens!

  9. Oh I haven't seen one of those in years. Thanks for the memory, and you know they did need a little something extra. The typewriter keys are perfect thing.

  10. Love, love, love them Betsy! I found a few of these while pickin' through stuff at flea markets. I was going to use them on my charm bracelets but then realized they'd be better as charms on necklaces! I haven't done it yet, though. Also love the way you staged them in your photos, genius! :) Good luck with Etsy I'm sure you'll be a great success!
