Grand Old Rustic Flag

I've had the urge to create a big old rustic flag for the last couple of years.  I've seen so many clever and creative ideas on Pinterest, but I kept putting the idea on the back burner because I just couldn't find something large enough and junky enough for what I had in mind.

I finally found something!

I found this old thing at a country yard sale about two months ago. I'm not too sure what it was originally used for, but I saw my flag opportunity and grabbed it before someone else noticed the same potential. It took me longer to clean and stabilize this thing than it did to complete the entire project.

When I received a sample box of Fusion Mineral Paint products to try out, I knew the Champlain, Fort York Red, and Liberty Blue would be perfect for turning this ugly duckling into a grand old rustic flag. The Fort York Red was a little bright for this rustic flag, so I mixed in a very small amount of Liberty Blue to tone it down.

My first thought was to stencil stars along the four blue slats, but I was in the mood for something a little different.  It looks like driftwood to me.

Starfish to the rescue!  I used a little E6000 glue to attach them to the boards.

No priming was necessary to get solid coverage even on this dark and very dried up wood.  What a time saver!  After the Fusion Mineral Paint dried, I used 60 grit sandpaper to soften the edges.
