Stenciled Window Screens

It was a happy day when I discovered some vintage sliding screens at an antique mall last month. I'm always on the hunt for a new supply of old screens to stencil, so I grabbed all three that were hanging in the booth, then checked every nook and cranny for more. No such luck, so I turned three screens into five by separating the two larger ones.

Screen #1 points the way to the Flea Market.

I used a Flea Market stencil that I created with my Silhouette Cameo on two of the separated screens. The cheap sticky shelf paper liner was a real pain to work with because it wouldn't stick to the screen, but at least it was easy to remove so I could use it on screen #2.

A very dry brush and pouncing motion leaves a crisp line on the heavy texture of the screen.

Screen #3 was stenciled with one of my favorite Old Sign Stencils that I received from Funky Junk Interiors. Even though I had to tweak parts of the stencil to fit on the screen, it was a whole lot easier to work with than the vinyl.

I used white acrylic paint to stencil the first overlay, then black acrylic paint for the BINGO and Free Space overlay.  The final step was to glue a magnet to the back of each wooden game piece. Now it's a functional magnetic board and not just a cute sign!

Screen #4 found a new home during my vintage show a couple of weeks ago. Screen #5 (not pictured) was stenciled with an Eiffel Tower postage stamp.

The original version of my Vintage Goods folding screen still hangs in my entryway. You can see that post here.
I'm going out treasure hunting at a vintage street fair on Sunday. I'll bet you can guess what's on my shopping list!

I had not seen screens painted before! On home screens this might be cute to add an architectural effect to corners of screens, or corner lace look. Know what I mean?

  20. Michelle L.October 3, 2015 at 11:03 AM

Wait, hold the phone, did you turn a screen into a magnetic bingo card? OMGeeeeee, you are good! Love them all. The things you see!

I never wold have thought that paint would work well on the screens but as my father used to say, "You learn something every day!" They look great! xoKathleen
